One of the main aims of this journey is to become a more active school on a daily basis. ''More Active, More Often''. Did you know that Children need at least 60 minutes of moderate intense physical activity every day?
Active School Walkway- Our school caretaker recently helped to erect our new Active Walk-way which runs around the perimeter of the pitch. Our plans for the future include making this walkway tarmac so we can use it all year round. In Winter we use the mini walk-way. The classes are really enjoying using this walkway for learning outside the classroom!
Classes completing the Road to Paris Olympic Challenges as part of class movement breaks!
All classes have began their 4 week running challenge. The ASF committee asked for feedback from classes and everyone agreed to stick with last year's challenge. The prize is an afternoon of Active choice activities in the last week of school.
All classes enjoying the space now that we are on the grass again :)
We love moving our bodies during the day. This helps us to concentrate, regulate and stay fit!
Rainy day movement breaks are so important when we are stuck inside!
We really enjoyed taking part in the Olympic movement btreaks as part of our 4 week Active break every day Challenge.
We have a no ball policy on small break due to space on tarmac, we love seeing the children using other equipment and their imagination, this was something that was requested on our pupil and parent surveys.
Our ASF committee are in charge of rotating the equipment every few weeks. They ask their classes to vote on what equipment they would like to use.
Each class took part in the 4 week movement break challenge over November and December.
3rd to 6th took part in a mini Soccer Christmas tournament, they celebrated the winning team with a Santa cup!
We had 32 reps from 1st to 6th taking part in the Annual Fairy
We love being active during all subjects through Scavenger hunts and games.
Blackhall Gaels Walkathon, all classes walked up to Blackhall GAA where they completed laps of the
Halloween walking parade up to the local church.
The Active school committee organised lots of lovely activities for European Sports day which gave all of our kids a great opportunity to sample the new equipment.

2021-2022
Cross Curricular Activities 3rd and 4th class had great fun today taking on the role of the Ancient Egyptians!! They incorporated physical activity into their games through building pyramids, mummifying each-other and playing different Egyptian ball games. They had to run to various places to fetch their equipment before they could build.
Juniors and Seniors took a lovely walk around the school ground and our new garden learning all about the trees and plants that are growing around us!
Active PLaytimes Our Active School committee works hard everyday to ensure every child is as active during play-time. Committee members rotate each day to give each class 20 minutes of an active-game directed by them. The children of school compiled a list of Playground games at the beginning of the year when they were learning about Procedural writing in Literacy. These are time-tabled on the Active school noticeboard weekly so the children know exactly who is doing what and what they need.
Children enjoy a variation of activities set up for them including Tag, Football drills, skipping games and lots more! Some Yoga has even crept in!
Daily Mile All classes have been taking part in the Daily Mile since September. We have seen a huge increase in children's fitness levels and it has inspired lots of children to take up Running as an extra curricular activity. The ASF committee measured the perimeter of our field which is 200m so we complete 8 laps of the field everyday. Juniors to 2nd use lollipop sticks to count their laps. 3rd and 4th class use bean-bags to count theirs!
Run a Mile a Day for Cancer Each class ran a Mile a day for Cancer this week with all classes completing the final mile together on Friday. Ms. Kavanagh sponsored every child in 3rd/4th class 1euro for every mile they ran during the week. This amounted to 99 miles as a whole class over the 4 days so we rounded it up to 100euro and donated this to The Irish Cancer Society along with funds raised from a bake sale.
Since Daffodil Day's Run a Mile for Cancer 3rd/4th class are becoming much more competitive with their Daily Mile and are now trying to beat their time everyday with the fastest time so far of 6 minutes!! All children in 3rd/4th can complete the Daily Mile withing 10 minutes, a huge improvement from when they first started it.
On Daffodil day the children wore yellow and all came out to complete their daily Mile together as a whole school.
Active homework All classes committed to the 60 minutes a day physical Activity challenge chart in March. They filled it out during class and completed it for homework also.
Busy Breaks
Busy Breaks Our Classrooms make a conscious effort to take physical activity breaks throughout the day especially on rainy days. These range from Drop everything and move to Just Dance, Go Noodle and Busy Buckets! The children find it great for their fitness and concentration levels. All classes committed to 3 Physical Activity breaks a day in November. We also love the Body Coach workouts!
We took part in Active Advent this year, instead of opening a calendar to get a sweet we used the Active Advent Powerpoint to get active!
Our Sports teams
Cumann na mbunscol Leagues Our 5th and 6th class girls and boys team trained hard from September and it all paid off when they reached the Finals in November, however they were beaten by Meath Hill in a thrilling game. We had great support from our school for the team and from our whole community. Thank you to everybody. We are very proud!
The same group of players are currently competing in the Cumann na Mbunscol Hurling Leagues.
5-aside Soccer Well done to the Girls and Boys 6th class soccer teams who competed in the FAI 5-aside in March. They both did their school proud, with the girls competing with great team-work and sportsmanship and the boys reaching the final on the day through hard work and skill. Well done!
Dance shed We have introduced music to the yard and the children are loving it!
10@10 On Fridays the whole school come out together to participate in our 10@10. The ASF leaders and along with 5th and 6th class organise and lead this.
Teachers-V-Students
We took part in European week of sport from 24th-28th of September. We used this week to launch our active schools initiatives for the year. Each class began their Duathlon, Daily Mile, Body coach and 10@10 workouts. Friday was Teachers-V-Students day. The whole school came out and ran the Daily Mile together. We then had a competition between each of the classes and the class teachers. Ms. Kelly and her fellow teachers took on Junior and Seniors in the bean-bag throw and won! Ms. Mc Ardle's class were too strong for the teachers beating them in Tug-o-war!! The teachers were no match to Ms. Kavanagh's 3rd and 4th class as the children doubled the score of the teachers in basketball hoops and finally Ms. Ward's 5th and 6th lost out narrowly to the teachers in a penalty shoot-out. Great fun was had by all.
School Year 17/18
1. We will be continuing on our much loved Operation Transformation 10 @ 10 which takes place every Friday in the school yard.
2. All classes will now follow 3rd and 4th Class' lead and join in on our Run around Europe Challenge which involves each class working as a team to run the distance to different European cities. It’s a great way to RUN, have FUN and LEARN along the way. 3rd and 4th class have recently completed their run to London in which they ran 597km as a class.
3. Senior Classes will also participate in the 'Climb the Heights' Skipping Challenge which encourages classes and schools to #BeActive and to work together to climb the highest peaks in Europe! Children can also complete these challenges in their own time - click here to read about more resources.
4. Athletics equipment will be introduced at yard time and will rotate around each day for each class. This will be run by the ASF Committee.
5. All classes will replace written homework with Active homework only on a Thursday. In order for this to be successful, Children will be given a record sheet with ideas to help them and a space to record what exercise they have done. Parents are asked to encourage children to complete this active homework to the best of their ability.
6. Summer Mini-leagues will begin in April and will take place during class time in addition to PE.
