2018/2019
This year, the staff
prioritised Gymnastics
for further development.
We received support from the PDST in Gymnastics and The Fundamental Movement Skills.

Teachers used the resources from this session, Fundamental Movement Skills booklets and posters along with PSSI lesson plans and resources from the PDST website to plan and deliver 8-10 lessons in Gymnastics.

We planned a progression of lessons from Infants to 6th class, which included balancing on large body parts, balancing on small body parts, travelling using different parts of the body, doing individual, partner and group work and finally creating a sequence of balances and movement. We also concentrated on specific skills like rolls and handstands.
We decided to teach the Gymnastic strand during the months of January and February.
We found the Gymnastics the gymnastics sequencing and rolling cards excellent to teach the kids. We had these up on our IWB in the hall and also printed them out for station teaching. The children could refer back to teaching points to improve their movements.

Ultimate Frisbee
The Senior classes really enjoyed their Ultimate Frisbee taster session during Active School Week 2018 so we liaised Ultimate Ireland and purchased 13 Frisbees and created an 8 week lesson plan to link into our games unit this year.
Duathlon Programme
We will have Gary Crosson from Tri heroes running a Duathlon programme every Wednesday for 5 weeks from 26th of September to 24th of October. Tri Heroes brings together the lifelong activities of swimming, cycling and running to inspire, motivate and challenge children. The programme is delivered by an experienced Tri Heroes coach alongside the class teacher in a fun and varied manner whilst also challenging and suitable for all pupils as part of the curriculum,
Tri Heroes sessions are delivered on the schools grounds with basic sports equipment (Cones, Flags, Bibs), and in conjunction with the aquatics programme that is in place if applicable.
