Hurling
Blackhall GAA have returned this year to teach Hurling to each class once a week. Thanks to James and Noel for their expertise and all their help!

During Active week last year we had Gary from Tri-heroes Ireland come and give our classes a taster session in Duathlon. The children loved it so we linked up with Gary again this year and ran a 6 week Duathlon course for all classes. This was hugely successful and we thank Gary again for all his time and expertise.

Pupils filled out PE questionnaires and teachers concluded that children preferred PE to be split between 2 days per week.
The ASF committee along with pupils from 5th and 6th class set up activities for 10@10 every Friday.

3rd and 4th class wrote e-mails to Ms. Kavanagh suggesting ways we could become more active. Children suggested having an equipment break time day where they don't have to play a specific game but every class can use the equipment as they wish.
The ASF committee ensure this is organised efficiently.

The ASF committee and Senior classes were included in the planning for Active week. There was a huge demand for Athletics. A 6th class parent and coach of our local Athletic club in Dunboyne came along and taught the children hurdles and throwing. Great fun was had and lots of the children are now interested in joining Athletics.

3rd and 4th class surveyed all classes on games they would like to play at playtime. They then typed up these games as part of their Procedural Writing work in English. ASF members choose different games to implement for each class every week at playtime.

School year 17/18

  • We worked with Blackhall Gaels GAA club last year and were very lucky to have two excellent coaches in to teach Hurling.
  • North Kildare Rugby also sent a coach for Tag Rugby for children from 3rd-6th class.

  • All classes went swimming in term 3 to our local pool in Coolmine.
  • During Active week we liaised with parents who came to our school and gave taster sessions. We are very grateful for these experiences which the children really enjoyed.
  • We also liaised with Triathlon Ireland, Ultimate Frisbee Ireland and Navan Dance school who came and thought brilliant lessons in Duathlon, Ultimate Frisbee and Dance. We have reconnected with both clubs this year and are now taking part in a 5 week Duathlon course. We have also recently received an Ultimate Frisbee starter pack which will introduce this exciting game into the games strand in our curriculum.
  • Cumann na Mbunscol games have been in full flow since the beginning of the year. Our 5th and 6th class boys and girls have just reached the quarter finals which will be played soon. Our success would not be possible without our partnerships with BHG GAA who allow us to use their pitch to train and play games. Our parents have also played a special part in bringing children to and from matches and supporting children from the side-line. A special mention to Fintan Porter who has helped Ms. Kavanagh set up pitches and organise the team on match days. All help is greatly appreciated.
  • We have also been extremely lucky to have been given a kind donation of 30 new Gaelic footballs courtesy of Tom O' Connor. The children can now train and learn Gaelic football skills with excellent, age-appropriate footballs.
