Green Schools

Welcome to Rathregan NS Green School web page

Rathregan National School and Staff are delighted to be working towards our first Green Flag this year!

The Green School Programme is based on 7 steps:
1. Establish a Committee - We did this in September and those students have been working really hard throughout the year
2. Complete an Environmental Review, looking at things we were doing well and areas that we could improve on.
3. Come up with an Action Plan, which involves setting short term and long term targets for ourselves (ongoing)
4. Monitoring and evaluating our progress (ongoing)
5. Curriculum Work, where we integrate the Green School Programme across the curriculum where possible
6. Involving and Informing, which involves spreading our Green School message throughout the school through our Green School notice board, our lovely new webpage and our Action Day
7. Choosing a school Green Code

We have been working really hard on these 7 steps since September and will keep you informed of our progress on this webpage,

Thank you,
Ms. Dunne

                               Action Day

On Tuesday 9th April, we at Rathregan National School held our Community Action Day as part of our Green School’s Campaign. This involved a whole school clean up of the school grounds, planting a wild flower garden and weeding and planting new bulbs and seeds in our existing sensory garden.

Each
class was given a half an hour slot and a section of the school grounds to clean up. Junior and Senior Infants began and cleaned up the front of the school and around the teacher’s car park. 1st and 2nd class worked on the areas at the side of the school. 3rd and 4th class cleaned around the back of the school, the basketball courts and picnic benches, and 5th and 6th class looked after the pitch. Everyone put in a great effort and enjoyed using the gloves litter pickers. Four sacks of waste were collected!

Over the weekend, a kind member of the Batterstown Village Enhancement Association came to the school and dug up an area beside the sensory garden so that we could start our wild flower garden on the day. At 12 o’clock, 4 lovely parent volunteers came in and worked on this. The planted wild flower seeds and bee friendly bulbs around the wild flower patch. They also tidied up and weeded our existing sensory garden, putting down extra bark, raking the stones and planting sweet peas, sugar snap peas and sunflowers. This was done with the help of many of our students from all classes and it was very much appreciated! All of their hard work was worth it and the garden looks really well. We look forward to seeing it as things begin to grow over the next few weeks and months.

Overall the day was a great success and it was great to see everyone, students, staff, parents and members of the community working together for the good of the school!

Thanks to everyone involved!
     Green School Newsletter September 2019

Hi Everyone,
We are into the second year of our Green School Campaign and intend to apply for our Green School Flag at the end of November this year. Since September 2018 we have reduced our general waste and greatly improved our recycling habits.
We need to continue to reduce our general waste as a school, so just a reminder to all (staff included :)) to be mindful of the amount of general waste we create. Becoming more aware of the amount of single use plastics that we use, for example, single use bottles and plastic wrapping in our lunch boxes, is a reminder of just one way that we can do this. We will begin composting in each classroom from next week, so children will be enabled to dispose of their food waste in school in that way.
Remember that in school we can recycle all clean dry paper, card, hard plastic, tins and cans. Any general waste is to be brought home in lunch boxes. Also, don’t forget that each child should have a hand towel in school to dry their hands.
Finally, students came up with the following Green Codes for our school last year!
                                                                               Don’t be mean, be fantastic!
Keep our school green & recycle hard plastic!

I really don’t mean to be a nag,
                                                                               But reduce, reuse and recycle
So we can get our green flag!
The Green School information is available on the school initiatives page www.rathregannsinitiatives.com and will be updated in the coming weeks.

As always, thank you to everyone for your continued hard work and cooperation,
Ms Dunne and the Green School Committee
